Kozilek, the Great Distortion
The Commander
When you cast this spell, if you have fewer than seven cards in hand, draw cards equal to the difference.
Menace
Discard a card with mana value X: Counter target spell with mana value X.
Guide
Gameplan
Ramp hard into colorless mana, cast Kozilek to refill your hand to seven, then grind out the game with a flooded hand and a 12/12 menace beater. Use the discard-to-counter ability as a repeatable Force of Will to protect your board and stop key spells, eventually closing with big colorless threats or an Eldrazi Annihilator beatdown.
Strengths
- Casting Kozilek refills your hand, making it one of the best card-advantage commanders in colorless
- Built-in counterspell ability protects you and disrupts opponents without holding open mana
- 12/12 menace is a hard-to-block clock that demands removal
- Colorless identity lets it slot any mana rock and run heavy artifact ramp
Weaknesses
- 10 mana is a brutal cost; without ramp you do nothing for many turns
- Colorless has almost no removal, card filtering, or interaction outside artifacts
- The counter ability requires having a card of the exact matching mana value in hand
- No second color means weak board wipes and limited answers to enchantments
- Vulnerable to commander tax and getting Kozilek repeatedly answered
Key Cards
- Eldrazi Temple — Doubles as ramp that specifically slashes the cost of casting Kozilek and other Eldrazi.
- Ancient Tomb — Two colorless mana from one land is essential for accelerating into a 10-drop.
- Cloudpost — Locus lands with Glimmerpost and Vesuva snowball into explosive colorless mana.
- Conduit of Worlds — Lets you replay lands and recoup discarded cards, fueling the counter ability.
- Sword of the Animist — Voltron equipment that ramps lands while making Kozilek lethal faster.
- Sensei's Divining Top — A zero-cost card to discard for counters and a way to fix your draws.
Upgrade Path
Lean into the most explosive colorless ramp—Ancient Tomb, Ancient Tomb, Eye of Ugin, the Cloudpost package, and fast rocks like Grim Monolith and Mana Vault—to land Kozilek as early as possible. Add efficient colorless interaction (Karn, the Great Creator; Ugin, the Spirit Dragon; Spine of Ish Sah) and tutors like Eldrazi-friendly Eladamri's Vineyard alternatives such as Crucible of Worlds for land recursion. Finally, include cheap zero-cost cards to maximize the counter ability and a few additional Eldrazi titans to ensure you always have a closer in hand.
