What it does
Cohort is an activated ability found on certain Ally creatures from Battle for Zendikar block. It reads: "Tap another untapped Ally you control and tap this creature: [effect]." Essentially, you're tapping two Allies together as the cost to trigger a beneficial effect, like drawing cards, dealing damage, or gaining life.
The key nuance people miss: both the Cohort creature AND the other Ally must be untapped to begin with, since tapping them is part of the cost. Also, the second Ally can be any Ally you control—it doesn't need Cohort itself. Like any tap ability, the creatures generally need to have been under your control since your most recent turn began (summoning sickness applies to tapping for abilities with the tap symbol).
In Commander, Cohort shines in dedicated Ally tribal decks where you can flood the board and chain multiple Cohort abilities each turn for repeatable value.
