What it does
Convoke lets you tap creatures to help pay a spell's cost. When casting a spell with convoke, each creature you tap pays for either one generic mana or one mana of that creature's color. So a white creature can pay
or
, but a green creature can't pay
.
The biggest misconception: tapping creatures for convoke isn't an activated ability and doesn't use the stack—it happens while you're casting, as part of paying costs. This means it doesn't trigger "becomes tapped" effects the way a tap ability would, and you can convoke with creatures that have summoning sickness, since tapping for convoke isn't the same as tapping for
costs.
In Commander, convoke shines in token-heavy or go-wide decks, letting you dump expensive spells early while your board does double duty. Watch for tapping out leaving you without blockers.
