What it does

Desertwalk is a form of landwalk: a creature with desertwalk can't be blocked as long as the defending player controls a Desert (any land with the Desert subtype, like Desert, Sunscorched Desert, or Hashep Oasis). It's purely evasion—it doesn't make the creature unblockable against everyone, only against opponents who happen to control the relevant land type. The common mistake is thinking landwalk lets the creature "phase through" or do something special—it only affects whether it can legally be blocked. Blocking restrictions don't trigger combat damage early or grant trample; the creature still deals normal combat damage if it connects. In Commander, desertwalk is extremely niche since Deserts aren't a common land type across a four-player table. It's mostly relevant in dedicated Desert-themed builds or against specific opponents, making it situational evasion rather than reliable.
