Devoid is a characteristic-defining ability that simply makes a card colorless, regardless of the colored mana symbols in its cost. So a spell costing is still cast with black mana, but the card itself has no color—it's colorless everywhere it exists, including on the stack and battlefield.
The nuance people miss: devoid only affects color, not color identity. For Commander deck-building, a devoid card with black mana symbols still has black in its color identity, so it can't go in a deck that excludes black. Conversely, the card counts as colorless for anything that cares about color.
This matters with effects keying off colorless permanents (like Eldrazi synergies or "colorless creatures you control") and dodges color-based protection or hatred—a devoid creature sneaks past "protection from black" or a Pestilence wrath naming black.
