What it does
Domain counts how many of the five basic land types (Plains, Island, Swamp, Mountain, Forest) appear among lands you control. The more types you have, the bigger the effect—a spell or ability with domain scales from 1 to 5. It's about land types, not colors or number of lands, so dual and triple lands that have multiple basic types count for several at once.
The biggest misconception: nonbasic lands absolutely count if they have basic land types. A Tropical Island gives you both Forest and Island toward domain, and fetchable duals or shocklands like Steam Vents count their printed types. Snow basics and Wastes don't help unless they carry a basic type.
In Commander, domain rewards greedy, multicolor manabases—exactly what most decks already run. Cards like Tribal Flames or domain-scaling effects get huge with shocks, triomes, and fetchlands, often hitting the max of 5 effortlessly.
