What it does
Forage is an additional cost you can pay to activate certain abilities or cast certain spells: you either exile three cards from your graveyard, or you sacrifice a food. It rewards decks that fill their graveyard or generate food tokens, giving them extra value engines.
The common mistake is thinking you must exile three cards and sacrifice food—it's one or the other. You only need three cards in your graveyard if you choose that mode; if you have a Food, sacrificing it satisfies the entire cost by itself. Also note the cards are exiled, not just put on the bottom, so foraging permanently shrinks your graveyard.
In Commander, foraging interacts with graveyard-matters and recursion strategies—be mindful that exiling fuel can shut off delve, threshold, or reanimation. Pairing forage outlets with Food generators keeps the cost cheap and repeatable.
