What it does
Foretell lets you pay 2 generic mana during your turn to exile a card from your hand face down. On a later turn, you can cast it from exile by paying its foretell cost (often cheaper than its normal mana cost). This spreads a card's cost across two turns and hides information from opponents, since they don't know what you've tucked away.
The most common misunderstanding: you can foretell any card from your hand for 2 mana, not just cards with the foretell keyword—but only cards that actually have a foretell cost can be cast from exile that way. A non-foretell card stays stuck in exile. Also, you must wait until a turn after you foretold it to cast it.
In Commander, it smooths out mana usage, plays around counterspells and discard, and rewards bluffing—opponents can't easily tell if your face-down card is a threat or a dud.
