What it does

Freerunning is an alternative cost you can pay to cast a card, but only during a turn in which you dealt combat damage to a player with an Assassin or a commander. When that condition is met, you may cast the spell for its (usually cheaper) Freerunning cost instead of its mana cost. The key nuance: the trigger isn't limited to this turn's combat phase—any combat damage dealt earlier in the turn unlocks it, including via second main phase. It also doesn't have to be the same creature; once any Assassin or commander connects, you can cast multiple Freerunning spells. The damage must be to a player, not a planeswalker or creature, and it must be combat damage. In Commander, since your commander qualifies, Freerunning is widely enabled—just swing in with your commander and you've unlocked discounted spells, making it a strong incentive for aggressive, commander-centric decks.
