What it does
Metalcraft is an ability word that checks whether you control three or more artifacts. If you do, the card gains a bonus or unlocks an effect; if you don't, the ability simply isn't active. For example, Mox Opal can only tap for mana while you have metalcraft.
The most common mistake is forgetting that metalcraft is checked continuously, not just once. If your artifact count drops below three—say, an artifact creature dies or gets bounced—you instantly lose the benefit. Note that artifact lands, equipment, and even your tokens all count, and any artifact type qualifies.
In Commander, metalcraft rewards artifact-heavy builds, especially in colors like white, blue, and red. It's easy to enable in dedicated artifact decks but fragile against board wipes, so don't lean on a single Mox Opal as your only mana source when sweepers threaten your count.
