What it does
When a creature with Soulshift dies, you may return a Spirit card with mana value less than or equal to the Soulshift number from your graveyard to your hand. Soulshift N means you can grab a Spirit costing N or less, so a creature with "Soulshift 6" can return any Spirit with mana value 6 or lower.
The most common mistake is forgetting it only works on Spirit cards—it doesn't recur anything else, no matter how cheap. It's a triggered ability that fires on death (going to the graveyard), and it's optional, so you choose whether and what to return. Note the returned Spirit must already be in your graveyard when the trigger resolves.
In Commander, Soulshift shines in dedicated Spirit tribal builds (often Kamigawa-themed), providing steady card advantage and recursion. Outside that niche it's mostly negligible, since you need a critical mass of Spirits to benefit.
