What it does
Transmute is an activated ability you use from your hand: pay the transmute cost and discard the card to search your library for another card with the same converted mana cost (mana value), reveal it, and put it into your hand. Then shuffle. It's a tutor stapled to otherwise unremarkable spells, letting you find exactly the right card for the situation.
The big nuance: transmute is a sorcery-speed ability (you can only do it when you could cast a sorcery), and it can only be activated from your hand. It also fetches by mana value only—not by name, type, or color—so Muddle the Mixture (MV 2) grabs any two-cost card, like Swords to Plowshares or Cyclonic Rift's... no, only matching values. It's not casting the spell, so it doesn't trigger cast effects.
In Commander, transmute cards are flexible silver bullets—run them in combo decks to assemble pieces, or in control shells to tutor situational answers while still being castable spells in a pinch.
