What it does
Umbra armor is the defining ability of "totem armor" Auras (like Spider Umbra or Indrik Umbra). When the enchanted creature would be destroyed, you instead remove all damage from it and destroy the Aura. The creature survives.
The key nuance: totem armor only saves the creature from being destroyed. It does nothing against effects that exile, bounce, sacrifice, or reduce toughness to zero. So a board wipe like Wrath of God or Damnation only kills the Aura, not the creature—but Toxic Deluge or a -X/-X effect bypasses it entirely. If a creature would be destroyed by multiple sources at once (or has multiple totem armors), only one Aura is sacrificed per destruction event, and that's enough to keep the creature alive.
In Commander, it's a budget-friendly way to make a key creature resilient to the wraths that define the format, making it strong on commanders and Voltron builds.
