LegalCard DrawEDHREC #97
At the beginning of your upkeep, you draw a card and you lose 1 life.
Why is this card good?
Phyrexian Arena is one of the best repeatable card advantage engines available to mono-black and black-inclusive decks, and at three mana it pays for itself almost immediately.
The math is simple: an extra card every turn snowballs hard in a 40-life format where you can afford to bleed. Black struggles for card draw compared to blue, so Arena is a staple "fixed" engine — it sticks around, doesn't require you to do anything, and the life loss is trivial in most decks. It's especially great in aristocrats and sacrifice shells that already drink life (Liesa, Teval, K'rrik), and any grindy midrange deck wanting consistent gas.
When to skip it: fast, low-curve decks that win by turn 6-8 won't get enough value, and the slow trickle is too passive for cEDH. Avoid it in decks that pay life heavily (K'rrik combo lines, Necropotence shells, lots of fetches/painlands) where the cumulative drain genuinely matters and can get you killed.
Still — for most black decks, it's an easy include.
