Tasha, the Witch Queen
The Commander
Whenever you cast a spell you don't own, create a 3/3 black Demon creature token.
+1: Draw a card. For each opponent, exile up to one target instant or sorcery card from that player's graveyard and put a page counter on it.
−3: You may cast a spell from among cards in exile with page counters on them without paying its mana cost.
Tasha, the Witch Queen can be your commander.
Guide
Gameplan
Tasha steals instants and sorceries from opponents' graveyards by exiling them with page counters, then casts them for free with her -3, generating 3/3 Demons each time you cast a 'borrowed' spell. You play a Dimir control shell that fills graveyards (yours and theirs), protects Tasha, and snowballs card advantage into demons or a recurring loop of theft.
Strengths
- Repeatable card advantage and free spell casting that scales with the number of opponents
- Generates a steady stream of 3/3 Demon bodies whenever you cast spells you don't own
- Color identity gives access to the best counters, removal, and recursion in the format
- Punishes graveyard-centric and spellslinger opponents by hijacking their best cards
Weaknesses
- Demon generation and -3 value rely on opponents having good instants/sorceries in their yards
- Tasha is fragile to commander damage and creature attacks early
- Vulnerable to graveyard hate that empties opponents' yards before you can exile
- No built-in protection; needs the deck to defend her every turn
Key Cards
- Mind's Desire — A high-value spell to steal and free-cast, and casting copies you don't own triggers Demons.
- Bolas's Citadel — Lets you cast off the top and pile on spells, accelerating Tasha's loyalty and value.
- The Mycosynth Gardens — Cheap fixing aside, ramp and protection pieces keep Tasha alive to ultimate repeatedly.
- Teferi's Protection — A premier way to shield Tasha and yourself during a stalled, value-grinding game.
- Cyclonic Rift — A bomb to steal from opponents or run yourself, and a one-sided board reset to protect your walker.
Upgrade Path
Add proactive ways to fill opponents' graveyards (mill or self-fueling spell-heavy pods) so her -3 always has fuel, and prioritize cheap interaction and Tasha protection like Teferi's Protection and Swan Song. Lean into free-spell payoffs—rituals, extra-turn spells, and Bolas's Citadel—to convert her exile pile into explosive turns, and include fast mana (Mana Crypt, Dark Ritual) to deploy and defend her ahead of curve.
