The Scorpion God
The Commander
Whenever a creature with a -1/-1 counter on it dies, draw a card.
: Put a -1/-1 counter on another target creature.
When The Scorpion God dies, return it to its owner's hand at the beginning of the next end step.
Guide
Gameplan
The Scorpion God grinds out value by sprinkling -1/-1 counters to pick off small creatures and refill your hand whenever a counter-laden creature dies. You play attrition midgame, killing mana dorks, tokens, and X/1s while drawing into your gas, then close with wither/infect synergies, sacrifice loops, or sheer card advantage. The commander is nearly impossible to permanently answer thanks to its built-in recursion.
Strengths
- Recurring removal and an unkillable commander that always comes back to hand
- Strong card advantage engine triggering off any creature dying with a -1/-1 counter
- Excellent at neutralizing token swarms, mana dorks, and toughness-light boards
- Color identity gives access to premium black/red removal and tutors
Weaknesses
- Activated ability costs three mana per counter, so it's mana-hungry and slow to kill big creatures
- Relies on creatures dying with counters—blink/flicker, indestructible, and counter-removal disrupt the engine
- Vulnerable to fast combo decks since it operates at attrition speed
- Few direct, fast wins without dedicated combo packages
Key Cards
- Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons — Spawns a deathtouch Snake token every time you place a -1/-1 counter, fueling tokens and draws.
- Nest of Scorpions — Generates Scorpion tokens off your -1/-1 counter placements for a wide, value-rich board.
- Blowfly Infestation — Creates a loop with -1/-1 counters that can chain through your board and draw cards.
- Black Sun's Zenith — Mass -1/-1 counter sweeper that triggers a flood of card draws as creatures die.
- Necropotence — Turns your life total into a deep card engine that complements the God's grind plan.
- Grim Hireling — Treasure generation off creature deaths funds the expensive activated ability.
- Midnight Reaper — Doubles up the draw engine since your own dying creatures refill your hand.
Upgrade Path
Add fast mana (Sol Ring, Ritual effects) and Treasure makers to offset the expensive activated ability, then commit to a tight infinite engine such as Hapatra + Blowfly Infestation + Nest of Scorpions plus a free sacrifice outlet. Improve interaction density with efficient removal and counterspell-like effects, and tighten the curve so the deck can grind and combo rather than purely value-grind into the late game.

- Aristocrats — Creatures dying with -1/-1 counters feed both the draw trigger and sacrifice payoffs.
- Infect/Wither Tokens — Hapatra and -1/-1 synergies build token swarms that double as poison or sacrifice fodder.
