Vohar, Vodalian Desecrator
The Commander
: Draw a card, then discard a card. If you discarded an instant or sorcery card this way, each opponent loses 1 life and you gain 1 life.
, Sacrifice Vohar: You may cast target instant or sorcery card from your graveyard this turn. If that spell would be put into your graveyard, exile it instead. Activate only as a sorcery.
Guide
Gameplan
Vohar is a cheap looter that fuels and rewards a spellslinger graveyard plan. You cast and dig for instants/sorceries, loot away spells with Vohar's tap ability for incremental drain, then sacrifice him to flashback your best spell from the bin at the perfect moment. Over the game you grind value with cantrips and removal, then close with a big X-spell or recursive damage engine.
Strengths
- Two-mana looter that smooths draws and enables graveyard synergies from turn three onward
- Self-recurring spell value: sac him to recast a counterspell, board wipe, or finisher buried in the yard
- Rewards a deck full of cheap instants/sorceries with passive life drain every turn
- Cheap to recast if removed, so opponents rarely get full value from killing him
Weaknesses
- Drain trigger only fires when you discard an instant or sorcery, so creature-heavy or artifact draws give nothing
- Loots one card a turn at sorcery speed (the tap), which is slow raw advantage without payoffs
- Sacrificing him for flashback costs your engine, and replaying him eats mana
- Vulnerable to graveyard hate that shuts off both the discard payoff and the recursion mode
Key Cards
- Snapcaster Mage — Doubles down on Vohar's plan of flashing back instants and sorceries from the graveyard for tempo and value.
- Underworld Breach — Turns your graveyard of cheap spells into an explosive engine, synergizing with looted spells and combo finishes.
- Murktide Regent — Grows huge by exiling the instants/sorceries Vohar dumps and gives a clean creature-based win condition.
- Body Double — Reanimation and clone effects let you reuse Vohar's looting after sacrificing him, or copy threats.
- Past in Flames — A second flashback engine that complements Vohar's sac ability to chain a graveyard full of spells.
- Thousand-Year Storm — Each cast copies your spells, weaponizing the cheap instant/sorcery shell Vohar already wants.
Upgrade Path
Lean harder into cheap, high-impact instants and sorceries plus rituals (Dark Ritual, Cabal Ritual) to support an Underworld Breach or Past in Flames combo turn. Add efficient cantrips (Ponder, Brainstorm), more flashback/recursion (Snapcaster, Mystic Retrieval), and a fast mana base with fetch/dual lands to enable explosive turns. Round out with targeted graveyard interaction and a couple of clean win conditions like Aetherflux Reservoir or a copied finisher so your grind reliably converts to a kill.
