What it does
Changeling means the permanent (or card) has every creature type at all times, in all zones—on the battlefield, in your hand, graveyard, library, even on the stack. A Changeling creature is simultaneously a Goblin, Elf, Sliver, Zombie, Dragon, and so on, even if its printed type line just says "Shapeshifter."
The most common mistake is thinking it only counts on the battlefield; it applies everywhere, so a Changeling in your graveyard still counts for type-matters effects like delve substitutes or tribal recursion. Note it grants creature types only, not card types—it won't make an artifact creature count as a noncreature for some effects.
In Commander, Changelings are tribal glue. They fit any creature-type-themed deck, fill gaps as a universal lord target, enable "choose a creature type" payoffs, and let cards like Maskwood Nexus or Conspiracy turn your whole board into one tribe.
