Moritte of the Frost
The Commander
Changeling (This card is every creature type.)
You may have Moritte enter as a copy of a permanent you control, except it's legendary and snow in addition to its other types and, if it's a creature, it enters with two additional +1/+1 counters on it and has changeling.
Guide
Gameplan
Moritte enters as a copy of your best permanent—doubling a powerful creature, ramp piece, or game-changing nonland permanent while adding two +1/+1 counters if it's a creature. You ramp into a value engine, clone it with Moritte, and snowball that advantage into overwhelming card or board state, often abusing snow synergies along the way. Win by copying a haymaker, doubling mana or token production, and grinding the table out.
Strengths
- Flexible copy effect lets you duplicate your single best permanent, adapting to any board
- Snow typing unlocks powerful snow payoffs and ramp in a color pair that loves it
- Changeling makes Moritte relevant for tribal synergies and elf/wizard payoffs
- GU gives access to the best ramp and card advantage in the format
- Two free +1/+1 counters make creature copies bigger and counter-synergy friendly
Weaknesses
- Moritte is only as good as the permanent you copy—weak boards make it a vanilla body
- Five mana for a clone is slow against fast combo and aggro decks
- Legendary copies can't multiply the same legend, limiting some targets
- Vulnerable to spot removal and board wipes after you've invested mana copying
- No inherent way to protect itself or close games without support pieces
Key Cards
- Marit Lage's Slumber — Snow payoff that wins via a 20/20 flier, and Moritte's snow typing plus snow permanents fuel it fast.
- Birgi, God of Storytelling // Harnfel, Horn of Bounty — Illustrates copy value—doubling any strong nonland permanent like a mana engine or value god snowballs your turns.
- Doubling Season — Moritte enters with extra counters and many copy targets make tokens/counters, so doubling effects explode your board.
- Coppercoat Vanguard — Changeling support; any tribal lord boosts Moritte and its changeling copies as full members of every tribe.
- Rite of Replication — Snowballs alongside Moritte by mass-copying your best clone target for an instant board.
- Ohran Frostfang — A snow creature copy granting deathtouch and card draw—exactly the kind of value engine Moritte loves to duplicate.
Upgrade Path
Lean harder into snow ramp (Arcum's Astrolabe, snow basics, Boreal Druid) to both accelerate and enable Marit Lage's Slumber and Dead of Winter as efficient win/wipe lines. Add the best copy-doubling payoffs and proliferate engines, plus protection like Heroic Intervention and counterspells to shield your cloned haymaker. Tighten the curve with strong copy targets—mana doublers, draw engines, and tribal lords—so Moritte always has a high-impact permanent to duplicate.
