Koma, Cosmos Serpent
The Commander
This spell can't be countered.
At the beginning of each upkeep, create a 3/3 blue Serpent creature token named Koma's Coil.
Sacrifice another Serpent: Choose one —
• Tap target permanent. Its activated abilities can't be activated this turn.
• Koma gains indestructible until end of turn.
Guide
Gameplan
Koma drops on turn 5-7 as an uncounterable 6/6 that floods the board with a 3/3 Coil token every upkeep (including opponents'), giving you an ever-growing army to sacrifice for free tapping and indestructibility. You ramp hard early, protect Koma, and grind out value until your Coils overwhelm the table or fuel a payoff. Use the tap mode as soft Stax to lock down mana rocks, attackers, and blockers while you build an insurmountable advantage.
Strengths
- Generates free 3/3 bodies every single upkeep, including opponents' turns, snowballing fast
- Tap mode is repeatable soft removal/Stax that shuts off activated abilities and blockers
- Self-protects with indestructibility, making Koma extremely hard to permanently remove
- Can't be countered, so it reliably resolves into combo or control shells
Weaknesses
- Vulnerable to exile, bounce, and -X/-X effects that ignore indestructibility
- Coil generation slows you down if you have nothing to convert tokens into
- Seven mana is slow; without ramp you fall behind aggressive tables
- Sacrificing Serpents for value can leave your board thin against go-wide opponents
- No built-in card advantage engine—relies on the token board alone
Key Cards
- Cultivate — Ramps you toward seven mana fast and fixes your two colors to deploy Koma on curve.
- Pir, Imaginative Rascal — Adds +1/+1 counters to every Coil as it enters, turning chump tokens into a real threat.
- Doubling Season — Doubles the tokens (and any counters), pumping out two Coils per upkeep for explosive board presence.
- Craterhoof Behemoth — Converts your wide Coil army into a single-swing lethal alpha strike.
- Cyclonic Rift — Overloaded resets the board while your every-upkeep token engine immediately rebuilds yours.
- Skullclamp — Gives your free, expendable Coil tokens a powerful draw engine to refuel your hand.
- Heroic Intervention — Protects your entire board from a wrath, keeping the Koma engine and army intact.
Upgrade Path
Add fast ramp (Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Three Visits) so Koma lands early, plus token doublers like Doubling Season and Parallel Lives to multiply Coils. Layer in card advantage (Skullclamp, Beast Whisperer, Guardian Project) and a closer like Craterhoof Behemoth or Overwhelming Stampede to convert the board. Lean harder into Stax with Winter Orb-style effects since Koma's free tokens let you sacrifice for taps while your opponents stall.

- Stax / Pillow Fort — Tapping permanents and shutting off activated abilities each turn locks opponents out of resources.
- Aristocrats — A steady stream of expendable Serpent tokens fuels sacrifice payoffs and drain engines.
- Counters / +1+1 Synergy — Pairing Coils with counter doublers and anthems makes the token army threatening fast.
