What it does

Typecycling is a variant of cycling that lets you pay a cost and discard the card, but instead of drawing a random card, you search your library for a card of a specified type (like "plainscycling" or "landcycling" or "wizardcycling"), reveal it, put it into your hand, then shuffle. It's an activated ability that works only from your hand. The most common mistake: typecycling does not put the card onto the battlefield—it just goes to your hand, so landcycling fetches a land but you still have to play it normally. Also, since the card isn't required to be a basic land (unless it says "basic"), you can grab any matching card, but you don't have to find one if none exist. In Commander, landcycling is the standout for fixing mana and thinning your deck. Note that typecycling still triggers "when you cycle a card" effects, since it's a cycling ability.
