What it does
Undergrowth is a mechanic from Guilds of Ravnica (Golgari) that cares about the number of creature cards in your graveyard. Spells and abilities with Undergrowth scale based on how many creatures have died or otherwise ended up in your graveyard—the more creatures there, the bigger the effect. For example, Underrealm Lich and Izoni, Thousand-Eyed both reward a well-stocked graveyard.
The key nuance: Undergrowth counts creature cards in your graveyard, not creatures that died this turn or total cards. Tokens that die don't help, since they cease to exist before staying in the graveyard. Only actual creature cards count, and they're counted at resolution.
In Commander, Undergrowth thrives in graveyard-centric Golgari builds with self-mill and sacrifice. Beware graveyard hate—exile effects can shrink your Undergrowth count instantly, blunting your payoffs at a critical moment.
