Ayara, Widow of the Realm // Ayara, Furnace Queen
The Commander
, Sacrifice another creature or artifact: Ayara deals X damage to target opponent or battle and you gain X life, where X is the sacrificed permanent's mana value.
: Transform Ayara. Activate only as a sorcery. (
can be paid with either
or 2 life.)
At the beginning of combat on your turn, return up to one target artifact or creature card from your graveyard to the battlefield. It gains haste. Exile it at the beginning of the next end step.
Guide
Gameplan
Ayara is an aristocrats engine that converts your dying creatures and artifacts into life drain. Tap her to sacrifice a permanent, dealing damage equal to its mana value to an opponent while gaining that much life, then flip to Furnace Queen to start blink-reanimating high-value bodies each combat for free value and repeatable sacrifice fodder. You grind value, drain the table, and eventually loop high-mana-value permanents for lethal pings.
Strengths
- Built-in life drain that scales with mana value, rewarding fatty sacrifices over tokens
- Front side gives lifegain plus removal/reach, back side gives free recursion every combat
- Cheap 3-mana commander that does work immediately and on her own
- Excellent at grinding through wraths and stalled boards via repeated reanimation
Weaknesses
- Tap ability is once per turn unless untapped, so raw throughput is slow without enablers
- Heavily commander-dependent; without Ayara the deck is just a pile of sacrifice fodder
- Back side's exile-at-end-step means no permanent reanimation, limiting tempo gains
- Vulnerable to graveyard hate and creature removal targeting Ayara
Key Cards
- Mayhem Devil — Pings opponents off every sacrifice, multiplying Ayara's aristocrats output independent of her tap.
- Blood Artist — Drains the table on every creature death, stacking with Ayara's life-swing sacrifices.
- Ashnod's Altar — Free sac outlet that ramps and supplies bodies to feed Ayara and her ETB loops.
- Goblin Bombardment — Untapped sacrifice outlet so you aren't bottlenecked by Ayara's once-per-turn tap.
- Pitiless Plunderer — Turns each sacrifice into treasure, fueling explosive turns and recasting reanimated threats.
- Meteor Golem — High-mana-value body that deals big damage when sacrificed and removes a permanent when reanimated each combat.
Upgrade Path
Add untapped sac outlets (Viscera Seer, Carrion Feeder, Ashnod's Altar) so Ayara isn't your only outlet, and pack more aristocrat payoffs (Zulaport Cutthroat, Bastion of Remembrance) to multiply each death. Push toward a combo finish with Pitiless Plunderer plus a free reanimator and a 0-cost loop creature like Gravecrawler. Fast mana (Dark Ritual, Jeweled Lotus) and graveyard recursion (Victimize, Feldon) raise the ceiling considerably.

Archetypes
- Aristocrats — Her sacrifice ability plus death-payoffs turn dying creatures into life drain and direct damage.
- Reanimator — Furnace Queen returns big creatures or artifacts every combat for repeatable enters-the-battlefield and sacrifice value.
- Combo — Free sac outlets, treasure makers, and recursion enable looping creatures for infinite drain.
