Hanna, Ship's Navigator

Mana value3EDHREC#5,397

The Commander

{1}{W}{U}, {T}: Return target artifact or enchantment card from your graveyard to your hand.

Guide

Gameplan

Hanna is a value engine that turns artifacts and enchantments into a recurring resource, letting you replay your best permanents over and over. The deck grinds opponents out by attrition, locking the board with stax pieces or assembling artifact/enchantment combos while reusing key pieces from the graveyard each turn. You win slowly through inevitability rather than fast aggression.

Strengths

  • Repeatable recursion of artifacts and enchantments generates massive card advantage over a long game
  • UW gives access to the best removal, board wipes, and counterspells in the format
  • Excellent at rebuilding after wraths since key permanents come back from the yard
  • Naturally supports a low-to-the-ground value engine that's resilient to removal

Weaknesses

  • Activation is slow, mana-intensive ({1}{W}{U} plus tap), and only nets one card per turn
  • Relies heavily on Hanna being on the battlefield, making her a removal magnet
  • No green ramp or black tutoring limits speed and consistency
  • Can struggle to actually close games without a dedicated combo or wincon

Key Cards

  • Open the VaultsMass-returns all your artifacts and enchantments at once, the ultimate Hanna recovery payoff.
  • Sun TitanA second recursion engine that retrieves Hanna herself plus cheap permanents each attack.
  • Academy RuinsBuys back artifacts from your graveyard, redundantly extending Hanna's recursion plan.
  • SolemnityCombos with charge-counter pieces and enables lock pieces in an enchantment-heavy build.
  • Sword of the AnimistsEquipment-based ramp and value that Hanna can rebuy if it ever dies.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana and artifact ramp (Sol Ring, Mana Crypt, Signets) to offset Hanna's slow, expensive activation, and lean into a tight wincon like a Mindslaver/Academy Ruins lock or Approach of the Second Sun. Improve tutors and protection (Enlightened Tutor, Swords to Plowshares, counterspells) so you can find and defend your engine, and consider a stax shell with Winter Orb and Static Orb that you break parity on via recursion.

  • Assembling an artifact combo (e.g., Mindslaver loops with Academy Ruins) for total control
  • Voltron with recurring Swords and equipment on an evasive creature
  • A big finisher like Sun Titan beats or a swarm of recurred tokens
