Lyse Hext
The Commander
Prowess (Whenever you cast a noncreature spell, this creature gets +1/+1 until end of turn.)
Noncreature spells you cast cost less to cast.
As long as you've cast two or more noncreature spells this turn, Lyse Hext has double strike.
Guide
Gameplan
Cast a high density of cheap noncreature spells to grow Lyse Hext, trigger prowess repeatedly, and turn her into a double-striking threat once you've cast two spells in a turn. The cost reduction lets you chain cantrips, removal, and protection in a single turn while building toward lethal commander damage or a spell-velocity engine.
Strengths
- Built-in cost reduction makes every noncreature spell cheaper, smoothing out your curve and enabling explosive turns
- Double strike plus prowess can deal massive commander damage out of nowhere
- UW has premier card draw, counterspells, and protection to keep her alive and the engine running
- Low mana value (3) means she's cheap to recast after removal
Weaknesses
- Relies on the commander connecting, making her vulnerable to spot removal, blockers, and board wipes
- Prowess pump is temporary, so a single chump block or fog blunts your damage
- Light on raw board presence and inevitability without the commander in play
- Can struggle against heavy interaction or fast combo decks that outpace a single attacker
Key Cards
- Ral, Storm Conduit — Pings opponents each time you cast and copies your instants/sorceries, adding reach beyond combat damage.
- Aetherflux Reservoir — Turns a spell-heavy turn into a 50-life storm kill, giving you a non-combat win condition.
- Rhystic Study — Refuels your hand so you never run out of noncreature spells to cast and trigger prowess.
- Swiftfoot Boots — Hexproof and haste protect Lyse and let her attack the turn she lands.
- Sram, Senior Edificer — Draws a card for every Aura/Equipment, fueling a Voltron-leaning build alongside the prowess engine.
- Mystic Reflection — Cheap interaction that triggers prowess while reshaping the board, emblematic of the deck's efficient noncreature spells.
Upgrade Path
Tighten the curve with the cheapest possible cantrips and protection (Path to Exile, Swords to Plowshares, Brainstorm, Mystical Tutor) so you reliably hit two-plus spells per turn. Add fast mana and rituals like Sol Ring, Mana Crypt, and Mind Stone, plus protection like Lightning Greaves and Heroic Intervention to keep Lyse alive. Lean into a decisive payoff—Aetherflux Reservoir, Approach of the Second Sun, or double-strike voltron pieces like Embercleave-adjacent UW equipment—to give the deck inevitability beyond a single attacker.
