Junji, the Midnight Sky
The Commander
Flying, menace
When Junji dies, choose one —
• Each opponent discards two cards and loses 2 life.
• Put target non-Dragon creature card from a graveyard onto the battlefield under your control. You lose 2 life.
Guide
Gameplan
Junji is a mono-black sacrifice/reanimator value engine: cast a 5/5 flyer with evasion, then trade or sacrifice it to either drain and disrupt every opponent or steal the best creature out of any graveyard. Loop these triggers with recursion and free sacrifice outlets while grinding the table down with edicts, drain, and reanimation. You win by attrition, recurring threats, and a few high-impact reanimation targets.
Strengths
- Built-in card advantage and disruption: every death is a free Mind Rot or reanimation spell
- Evasive 5/5 with menace pressures life totals and carries equipment
- Mono-black gives access to the best tutors, ramp, and recursion in the format
- Self-recurring threat that punishes removal and pairs perfectly with sac outlets
Weaknesses
- Mono-black struggles with enchantments and resilient noncreature permanents
- The reanimation mode can't target Dragons, a real restriction in some metas
- No protection of its own; can be exiled or countered to deny the death trigger
- Slower than dedicated combo decks and reliant on grinding incremental value
Key Cards
- Phyrexian Altar — Free sacrifice outlet that triggers Junji's death ability while ramping into the next reanimation play.
- Ashnod's Altar — Sacrifices Junji at instant speed for mana and an immediate value trigger, enabling loops.
- Victimize — Doubles as a way to feed Junji to the yard and reanimate two bombs, synergizing with the steal mode.
- Liliana, Death's Majesty — Mills targets into yards and reanimates, while feeding the graveyards Junji loves to plunder.
- Reanimate — Cheaply returns Junji or a stolen target, turning the graveyard into a second hand.
- Sheoldred, the Apocalypse — Punishes the card draw your discard mode forces and drains the table alongside Junji.
Upgrade Path
Add fast mana (Dark Ritual, Jet Medallion, Bubbling Muck) and efficient tutors (Vampiric Tutor, Demonic Tutor, Diabolic Intent) to assemble engines faster. Lean into free sacrifice loops with Phyrexian/Ashnod's Altar plus reanimation to abuse the death triggers repeatedly, and include a tight combo finish like Gravecrawler plus an altar and a payoff. Round out with top-end reanimation targets such as Grave Titan, Massacre Wurm, and Razaketh to convert value into a hard win.

- Aristocrats — Free sacrifice outlets convert Junji and tokens into repeatable drain and reanimation triggers.
- Control/Attrition — Edicts, discard, and recursion let you out-grind opponents one card and creature at a time.
