Sheoldred, Whispering One
The Commander
Swampwalk (This creature can't be blocked as long as defending player controls a Swamp.)
At the beginning of your upkeep, return target creature card from your graveyard to the battlefield.
At the beginning of each opponent's upkeep, that player sacrifices a creature of their choice.
Guide
Gameplan
Cast Sheoldred, then grind the table out with recursion and forced sacrifice. Each of your upkeeps reanimates a creature for free while every opponent's upkeep edicts away their board, so you out-attrition everyone and rebuy your best threats turn after turn.
Strengths
- Free reanimation every turn provides relentless card advantage
- Recurring edicts strip opponents of their best blockers and combo pieces
- Mono-black gives access to the deepest tutor and ramp suite
- Pairs naturally with sacrifice outlets and ETB-value creatures
- A 6/6 swampwalker that pressures life totals on its own
Weaknesses
- Seven mana and slow the turn she lands without protection
- Removal-light against artifacts and enchantments inherent to mono-black
- Edicts let opponents sacrifice their worst creature, including tokens
- Heavy reliance on the commander; vulnerable to repeated removal/exile
- Symmetrical pace can be too slow against fast combo decks
Key Cards
- Gravecrawler — Endless sacrifice fodder you can recur all game to feed outlets and trigger value.
- Phyrexian Altar — Free sac outlet plus mana to convert reanimated creatures into engine fuel.
- Reassembling Skeleton — Repeatable sacrifice fodder that loops with Sheoldred's reanimation and edicts.
- Crypt Ghast — Doubles Swamp mana to accelerate into a seven-drop commander early.
- Sheoldred, the Apocalypse — Punishes opponents' draws and gains you life while you grind, a perfect curve-filler.
- Bolas's Citadel — Turns your high life total into explosive card advantage to refuel the grind.
- Cabal Coffers — Generates the mountains of black mana mono-black payoffs demand.
Upgrade Path
Add fast mana and reanimation enablers—Dark Ritual, Cabal Coffers, Crypt Ghast, Reanimate, Animate Dead—to deploy and protect her sooner. Lean into an Aristocrats payoff package (Blood Artist, Zulaport Cutthroat, Pitiless Plunderer, Phyrexian Altar) for a closed-loop kill, and include protection like Lightning Greaves and Imp's Mischief. Tutors (Demonic, Vampiric, Diabolic Intent) make every game consistent.
