Kazuul, Tyrant of the Cliffs
The Commander
Whenever a creature an opponent controls attacks, if you're the defending player, create a 3/3 red Ogre creature token unless that creature's controller pays .
Guide
Gameplan
Kazuul punishes opponents for attacking you by spitting out 3/3 Ogre tokens, then you flip those tokens into a swarm of attackers and aristocrat fodder. You play a politics-heavy goad/punisher game, forcing opponents into your defenses while building a board, then close with a big alpha strike or sacrifice payoffs. Turn to turn you incentivize attacks elsewhere or directly at you to bank tokens.
Strengths
- Generates free 3/3 tokens that snowball board presence with no mana investment
- Excellent in multiplayer politics, deterring attacks and punishing aggressive opponents
- Pairs naturally with goad effects to weaponize opponents' own creatures into your token engine
- Tokens enable aristocrats, go-wide, and sacrifice strategies in mono-red
Weaknesses
- Only triggers when opponents attack YOU, so passive tables produce nothing
- The
tax can be paid by mana-rich opponents to deny tokens
- Mono-red lacks card draw and recovery from board wipes
- Removal of Kazuul shuts off the entire engine; needs protection or recast plans
Key Cards
- Disrupt Decorum — Goads every opponent's creatures, forcing waves of attacks that mint Kazuul tokens.
- Grand Melee — Forces all creatures to attack each turn, turning the whole table into your token factory.
- Impact Tremors — Each Ogre token entering pings every opponent, converting tokens into direct damage.
- Purphoros, God of the Forge — Turns the constant stream of Ogre tokens into a relentless burn clock and sacrifice payoff.
- Goblin Bombardment — Sacrifices excess Ogres for guaranteed damage and removal at instant speed.
- Brutal Hordechief — Lifeswing and a goad-like attack tax that synergizes with your token army.
Upgrade Path
Lean harder into forced-attack enablers like Disrupt Decorum, Grand Melee, and Hissing Iguanar to maximize triggers, then add token payoffs (Purphoros, Impact Tremors, Krenko-style multipliers) and sacrifice outlets. Improve mono-red's weaknesses with card advantage from Outpost Siege, Faithless Looting effects, and treasure-based ramp like Dockside Extortionist; protect Kazuul with Bloodthirster of haste and recursion such as Feldon of the Third Path. Add a fast finisher like Craterhoof Behemoth or Pathbreaker Ibex to convert your wide board into a one-shot kill.

Win Conditions
- ▸Alpha strike with a wide board of Ogres pumped by anthems or Craterhoof-style effects
- ▸Drain the table with Impact Tremors, Purphoros, or Goblin Bombardment off endless tokens
- ▸Goad opponents into each other while your Ogre army outvalues and finishes survivors
Archetypes
- Tokens / Go-Wide — Kazuul builds an army of 3/3 Ogres for free that overrun the table with anthems and haste.
- Goad / Politics — Forcing opponents to attack you turns their creatures into your token engine while shaping the table.
- Aristocrats — Free Ogre tokens are perfect sacrifice fodder for damage and value payoffs in mono-red.
- Punisher / Pillowfort — Kazuul taxes and deters attacks, defending you while filling the board.
