Maralen, Fae Ascendant
The Commander
Flying
Whenever Maralen or another Elf or Faerie you control enters, exile the top two cards of target opponent's library.
Once each turn, you may cast a spell with mana value less than or equal to the number of Elves and Faeries you control from among cards exiled with Maralen this turn without paying its mana cost.
Guide
Gameplan
Flood the board with Elves and Faeries to repeatedly exile chunks of opponents' libraries, then steal and cast their best spells for free each turn. You snowball card advantage and tempo by playing your opponents' deck against them while milling them toward decking out, all while building a wide tribal board.
Strengths
- Generates relentless card advantage by casting opponents' free spells every turn
- Wide tribal synergies make each creature trigger valuable
- Can mill opponents toward losing via decking
- Flexible BGU access to ramp, interaction, and recursion
Weaknesses
- Free casts capped by your Elf/Faerie count, so a wrath cripples the engine
- Five-mana commander that does little the turn it lands
- Relies on opponents having good spells to steal
- Vulnerable to graveyard/exile hate and library shuffling effects
Key Cards
- Elvish Archdruid — Pumps your Elves and produces mana to deploy a wide tribal board fast.
- Bident of Thassa — Wait—better: tribal anthem and token engines amplify both triggers and free-cast capacity.
- Imperious Perfect — Generates Elf tokens each turn for extra exile triggers and a higher free-cast ceiling.
- Spellseeker — Tutors key answers and combines with Faerie/Elf bodies to chain value.
- Cloudstone Curio — Bounce-and-replay Elves/Faeries to spam enter triggers and dig deep into opponents' libraries.
- Bloom Tender — Ramps hard in this three-color shell to cast big stolen spells alongside your own.
Upgrade Path
Add token-makers and blink effects (Cloudstone Curio, Conjurer's Closet) to multiply ETB triggers and raise your creature count for bigger free casts. Improve mana with dorks like Bloom Tender and Faeburrow Elder, and add protection (Heroic Intervention, Teferi's Protection) to keep the tribal engine alive. Lean into a mill subtheme with extra exile triggers and overrun effects like Craterhoof Behemoth for a backup wide kill.

- Mill — Repeated exile triggers chip away at libraries to deck opponents out.
- Blink/Flicker — Re-triggering Elf and Faerie ETBs multiplies exile triggers and stolen-spell fuel.
