Muldrotha, the Gravetide
The Commander
During each of your turns, you may play a land and cast a permanent spell of each permanent type from your graveyard. (If a card has multiple permanent types, choose one as you play it.)
Guide
Gameplan
Muldrotha turns your graveyard into a second hand, letting you replay a land, creature, artifact, enchantment, and planeswalker from your yard every turn. You grind out value through repeatable ETB effects, sacrifice loops, and recursion until you out-resource the table, then close with an engine or combo.
Strengths
- Unmatched card advantage and resilience by recasting permanents from the graveyard each turn
- Enables powerful sacrifice and reanimation loops that opponents can't easily disrupt
- Self-mill becomes an asset, fueling rather than hurting your gameplan
- BUG colors give access to elite ramp, removal, and tutors
Weaknesses
- Heavy reliance on the commander; repeated removal taxes you and stalls the engine
- Graveyard hate (Rest in Peace, Bojuka Bog) can shut the deck down entirely
- Mana-hungry and slow to set up, vulnerable to fast aggro and combo
- One permanent of each type per turn limits explosive turns without extra enablers
Key Cards
- Crucible of Worlds — Lets you replay fetchlands and sacrifice lands every turn alongside Muldrotha's land drop.
- Sakashima of a Thousand Faces — Copies Muldrotha for redundancy and a second engine that survives removal of the original.
- Strionic Resonator — Cheap artifact you can recur and reuse to double powerful ETB and triggered abilities.
- Ramunap Excavator — Backs up the land recursion plan and combos with sacrifice-lands for value.
- Phyrexian Altar — Provides mana and a sacrifice outlet to fuel recursion combos and creature loops.
- Eternal Witness — Recurs spells from the yard and itself reentry off Muldrotha for repeatable retrieval.
Upgrade Path
Add fast mana (Mana Crypt, Mox Diamond) and dual lands to set up Muldrotha sooner, plus tutors (Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor) to assemble combos consistently. Lean into a compact win like Mikaeus/Triskelion or an altar-based drain loop rather than purely grinding value. Protect your engine with counterspells and recurring interaction, and trim slow do-nothing permanents.

Win Conditions
- ▸Sacrifice loops with Phyrexian Altar plus a drain payoff like Blood Artist or Zulaport Cutthroat
- ▸Recurring stax and value pieces to out-grind the table then close with a big threat
- ▸Recurring board wipes plus reanimation to win an attrition war
- ▸Infinite recursion combos producing unbounded mana, draw, or damage
Archetypes
- Reanimator — Recasts big creatures and value permanents from the graveyard every turn for relentless pressure.
- Aristocrats — Sacrifice and replay cheap creatures with altars and drain effects for incremental loops.
- Lands — Crucible-style recursion of sacrifice and value lands generates grinding card and mana advantage.
- Control — BUG's removal and counters plus recurring stax pieces let you lock down the board.
