Ob Nixilis, Captive Kingpin
The Commander
Flying, trample
Whenever one or more opponents each lose exactly 1 life, put a +1/+1 counter on Ob Nixilis. Exile the top card of your library. Until your next end step, you may play that card.
Guide
Gameplan
Ob Nixilis turns incremental 1-damage effects into a snowball of card advantage and growth: every time each opponent loses exactly 1 life, he grows and impulse-draws a card. You curve out cheap pingers, token makers, and aristocrat drains, then convert that engine into an evasive Voltron finisher or just bury the table in card velocity.
Strengths
- Generates repeatable card advantage in colors that traditionally lack it
- Flying + trample makes him a real Voltron threat that grows on its own
- Synergizes with cheap, redundant effects you'd run anyway (Blood Artist effects, pingers, tokens)
- Pressures the whole table simultaneously, accelerating clocks
Weaknesses
- Triggers only on exactly 1 life lost per opponent—big damage spells won't fire it
- Highly commander-dependent; removing Ob Nixilis stalls the engine
- Impulse draw can strand expensive cards you can't cast that turn
- Symmetric pingers like Pestilence can hurt your own board and life total
- BR struggles to interact with resolved enchantments/artifacts
Key Cards
- Impact Tremors — Each creature ETB deals 1 to every opponent, triggering Ob Nixilis off your tokens and recursion.
- Blood Artist — Every death drains each opponent for exactly 1, repeatedly firing the engine in aristocrats shells.
- Zulaport Cutthroat — Redundant Blood Artist that makes each sacrifice a guaranteed trigger and card.
- Pestilence — Repeatable 1-damage-to-each-opponent activations chain counters and impulse draws.
- Witch's Cauldron — Cheap, repeatable pinging-by-loss effects keep the trigger going every turn.
- Cruel Celebrant — Another drain-on-death enabler that turns wide boards into a card-advantage avalanche.
Upgrade Path
Lean into cheap, redundant 1-damage and drain effects (Suture Priest's mirror, Bastion of Remembrance, multiple Blood Artist clones) so the engine fires every turn rather than situationally. Add fast mana and protection like Lightning Greaves and Boots to keep Ob Nixilis online, plus token doublers and free sacrifice outlets to maximize triggers. To push higher, add tutors (Vampiric/Demonic) and an aristocrats combo finish such as Persist loops with a Blood Artist effect for an instant kill.

Win Conditions
- ▸Commander damage via an ever-growing flying, trampling Ob Nixilis
- ▸Aristocrats drain plus chip damage grinding the table to zero
- ▸Out-carding the table then deploying overwhelming threats from impulse draws
- ▸Pestilence/symmetric pingers finishing low life totals
Archetypes
- Aristocrats — Death-drain triggers like Blood Artist convert every sacrifice into a counter and an impulse draw.
- Tokens — Go-wide creatures plus Impact Tremors flood opponents with 1-damage pings each ETB.
- Voltron — His self-growing flying trample body closes games while the engine refuels your hand.
- Spellslinger/Pinger — Cheap repeatable 1-damage sources reliably trigger card draw and incremental growth.
