Ozai, the Phoenix King
The Commander
Trample, firebending 4, haste
If you would lose unspent mana, that mana becomes red instead.
Ozai has flying and indestructible as long as you have six or more unspent mana.
Guide
Gameplan
Ramp into Ozai on turn 5-6, swing with his haste, and let firebending 4 plus the rule that unspent mana becomes red turn each combat into a mountain of you can dump into X spells, burn, and reanimation. Hold 6+ unspent mana to make him a flying, indestructible 6-power trampler that's nearly impossible to block or kill, then convert that mana flood into a lethal turn.
Strengths
- Generates an explosive burst of red mana every combat that fuels huge X spells and double spells
- Becomes evasive and indestructible at six mana, making him a resilient, hard-to-answer threat
- Haste means he pressures the board the turn he lands and immediately starts banking mana
- The 'unspent mana becomes red' clause prevents wasted mana and smooths out big-mana turns
Weaknesses
- Six-mana commander is vulnerable to removal before he attacks (no protection until you have mana floating)
- Firebending mana only appears on attack, so he must connect to pay off
- Color identity lacks blue/green ramp and counterspells, leaning on artifact and ritual ramp
- Exile-based and 'can't attack' effects bypass his indestructibility
- Mana doesn't carry between turns, so you must spend the firebending burst the same combat
Key Cards
- Comet, Stellar Pup — A planeswalker that loves dumping mana, but more importantly any big-X or expensive-spell payoff turns Ozai's combat mana into immediate value.
- Fireball — A scalable X burn spell that converts Ozai's firebending mana directly into damage or a kill.
- Torment of Hailfire — The premier black mana sink to dump a flooded firebending turn into a game-ending drain.
- Aggravated Assault — Extra combat steps mean extra firebending triggers, snowballing mana and damage into a loop.
- Jeska's Will — A burst ritual that, combined with firebending, gives you enough mana to chain huge spells in one turn.
- Reckless Fireweaver — Cheap pingers and artifact synergies let leftover red mana keep doing work each turn.
- Dockside Extortionist — Massive ritual ramp to push you past the six-mana threshold for flying and indestructible quickly.
Upgrade Path
Add fast mana and rituals (Dockside Extortionist, Jeska's Will, Mana Geyser, Ancient Tomb) to consistently clear the six-mana threshold and overflow firebending. Lean into extra-combat enablers (Aggravated Assault, Combat Celebrant, Hellkite Charger) plus haste/evasion equipment to make Ozai a true one-shot threat. Top end the curve with elite mana sinks like Torment of Hailfire and Comet, Stellar Pup, and protect your commander with cheap interaction so he always gets in.
