The Commander

Whenever Sethron or another nontoken Minotaur you control enters, create a 2/3 red Minotaur creature token.

{2}{B/R}: Minotaurs you control get +1/+0 and gain menace and haste until end of turn. ({B/R} can be paid with either {B} or {R}.)

Guide

Gameplan

Sethron is a Minotaur tribal payoff that doubles your board with every nontoken Minotaur you cast, then turns the swarm lethal with a repeatable team pump granting menace and haste. Curve out cheap Minotaurs, deploy Sethron, and swing wide with hasty, hard-to-block beaters. The activated ability lets you alpha strike the turn Sethron lands and pushes through chump blockers.

Strengths

  • Builds a wide board fast since every Minotaur creates a token, generating two bodies per cast
  • Built-in haste and menace via the activation makes the deck explosive and evasive without extra support
  • Aggressive low curve closes games quickly before slower decks set up
  • Menace plus go-wide makes combat very hard to profitably block

Weaknesses

  • Heavy reliance on Sethron — repeated board wipes and removal blunt the whole deck
  • Token generation only triggers off nontoken Minotaurs, so you must keep casting real creatures
  • Limited card advantage in mono-aggro BR; can run out of gas in long games
  • Vulnerable to fogs, sweepers, and life-gain decks that stabilize against aggro

Key Cards

  • Didgeridoo — Puts Minotaurs into play from hand for {2}, dodging counters and still triggering Sethron's token-making.
  • Ragemonger — Makes your Minotaurs dramatically cheaper, letting you flood the board and chain triggers in a single turn.
  • Boros Reckoner — A premium Minotaur body that doubles as removal and a sink for damage in combat.
  • Felhide Spiritbinder — Copies your best creature each combat for extra Minotaur value and bodies.
  • Purphoros, God of the Forge — Each token and Minotaur entering pings every opponent, turning your wide board into direct damage.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana (Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Ragemonger) and recursion like Phyrexian Reclamation to rebuild after wipes. Lean into payoffs that punish go-wide — Purphoros, Impact Tremors, and a big overrun (Craterhoof Behemoth, Pathbreaker Ibex) — plus protection like Heroic Intervention to shield your board. Tighten the curve and add evasion enablers so Sethron's menace pump consistently lands lethal.

  • Go-Wide Tokens — Each nontoken Minotaur doubles your bodies, building a token army quickly.
  • Voltron-lite/Combat — Menace and haste activation can funnel evasive damage through key threats.
