Thrakkus the Butcher
The Commander
Trample
Whenever Thrakkus attacks, double the power of each Dragon you control until end of turn.
Guide
Gameplan
Drop fat Dragons, swing with Thrakkus, and double the power of your whole board for explosive one-shot kills. You ramp into Dragons on turns 3-5, deploy Thrakkus by turn 5-6, and turn a single attack into 30+ trampling damage spread across the table. Play it like an aggressive Dragon midrange deck that ends games out of nowhere.
Strengths
- Massive burst damage — doubling power on multiple Dragons can one-shot players, often as a commander-damage kill
- Trample on Thrakkus means blockers rarely stop the damage
- Naturally aggressive and proactive, applying pressure across all opponents
- Gruul Dragons have great ramp and big bodies to abuse the trigger
Weaknesses
- Needs Dragons in play before the trigger matters — clunky if you stall on creatures
- Highly dependent on Thrakkus connecting; vulnerable to removal, fog, and combat tricks
- No card advantage or evasion engine baked in; runs out of gas if board is wiped
- Telegraphed attacks let savvy opponents hold up blockers or instant-speed removal
Key Cards
- Utvara Hellkite — Spawns a 6/6 Dragon each time a Dragon attacks, snowballing your board for the doubling trigger.
- Dragon Tempest — Gives all your Dragons haste so they swing the turn they enter and turns flyers into burn machines.
- Scourge of Valkas — Pings for damage equal to its power when Dragons enter — and Thrakkus doubling its power makes that lethal.
- Temur Ascendancy — Hastes your Dragons and draws a card whenever a big creature enters, fixing the deck's card-advantage problem.
- Berserkers' Onslaught — Grants double strike to attackers, multiplying the already-doubled power for absurd damage output.
- Sarkhan, Fireblood — Ramps specifically into Dragons and loots away dead cards to find more threats.
Upgrade Path
Add evasion and protection — Lightning Greaves, Heroic Intervention, and Dragon Tempest's haste keep your threats alive and connecting. Lean into doublers and double strike (Berserkers' Onslaught, Fireshrieker, Atarka, World Render) to convert one good attack into a kill, and prioritize fast Gruul ramp (Cultivate, Sol Ring, Sarkhan, Fireblood) to land Thrakkus a turn early. To reach high power, run repeatable card advantage like Outpost Siege and a swift mana base so a board wipe doesn't end your game.

Archetypes
- Dragon Tribal — Thrakkus rewards a board full of Dragons by doubling each one's power on attack.
- Voltron / Big Beats — A single doubled trampling Dragon can deal lethal commander or combat damage in one swing.
- Aggro Midrange — Gruul ramp into fat fliers with a built-in finisher makes for a fast, proactive curve.
