Varchild, Betrayer of Kjeldor
The Commander
Whenever Varchild deals combat damage to a player, that player creates that many 1/1 red Survivor creature tokens.
Survivors your opponents control can't block, and they can't attack you or planeswalkers you control.
When Varchild leaves the battlefield, gain control of all Survivors.
Guide
Gameplan
Attack with Varchild to force opponents to make Survivor tokens, which can't attack you or block, then steal them all when Varchild dies or is sacrificed. You leverage those stolen tokens for sacrifice fodder, group slug, or a big Aristocrats/token payoff finish in mono-red.
Strengths
- Generates a huge army out of thin air that you ultimately control
- Survivors can't block, so they enable safe alpha strikes and sneaky combat damage
- Mono-red consistency and access to fast mana and aggressive support
- Repeatable steal loop with cheap sac/recur outlets and blink-adjacent effects
- Cheap, evasive-leaning commander that snowballs board presence quickly
Weaknesses
- Tokens stay with opponents until Varchild leaves, so a slow death gives opponents fodder/blockers
- Mono-red lacks card draw, ramp diversity, and removal flexibility
- Heavy reliance on combat damage from a 1/1; needs evasion or pumps
- Board wipes can erase your stolen army and stall the plan
- Giving opponents tokens can fuel their Aristocrats or token strategies if Varchild lingers
Key Cards
- Goblin Bombardment — Free sac outlet that, paired with bouncing/recurring Varchild, lets you reclaim and fling the Survivor army.
- Skullclamp — Turns your stolen 1/1 Survivors into a relentless card-draw engine in token-starved mono-red.
- Impact Tremors — Pings every opponent each time a Survivor or token enters, converting your army into direct damage.
- Purphoros, God of the Forge — Each token entering deals 2 to each opponent, weaponizing both forced and stolen Survivors.
- Sneak Attack — Cheats Varchild and beaters in for combat damage, then sacrifices to instantly steal all Survivors.
- Fervor — Gives Varchild haste so she can connect immediately and start the Survivor engine.
- Rite of the Raging Storm — Adds an unstoppable evasive threat and more token synergy to keep the army growing.
- Bloodthirster — Extra combat steps double Varchild's triggers and stolen-token aggression.
Upgrade Path
Add fast mana (Sol Ring, mana rocks, ritual effects) and cheap evasion or haste enablers so Varchild connects reliably turn after turn. Build a tight reclaim loop—cheap sac outlets plus a way to recur or flicker Varchild (Goblin Bombardment + Feldon, or Sneak Attack + a sac outlet)—so you control the Survivors on your terms. Lean into a payoff package (Skullclamp, Impact Tremors, Purphoros, an overrun like Breath of Fury or anthems) to convert the token surplus into immediate wins rather than passively gifting fodder.
