Why is this card good?
Explosive acceleration that pushes your gameplan a full turn ahead. Mana Vault produces three colorless for one mana, netting +2 immediately. That's the kind of jump that lets you slam your commander or a key engine well ahead of curve, which compounds harder in Commander than almost any format.
The downside is real but manageable: it stays tapped, pinging you 1 per upkeep until you pay
to untap or just leave it down. In most games you spend it the turn you cast it, untap it later if you're flooded with mana, and the chip damage is trivial across a 40-life format.
Who wants it: any deck trying to win early or out-tempo the table — cEDH, fast combo, spellslinger, big-mana ramp, and Game Changer-bracket decks generally. It's a staple in high-power pods.
Skip it in slower, casual battlecruiser builds where you don't need the speed and the self-damage plus dead late-game draws aren't worth it. It's a bracket-defining card — keep it out of bracket 1-2.
