Appa, Steadfast Guardian
The Commander
Guide
Gameplan
Appa is a mono-white blink/value engine: flash him in at instant speed, airbend (exile) your own ETB permanents to reuse their enters-the-battlefield triggers and recast them for just , generating a 1/1 Ally token every time you cast something from exile. You snowball board presence and value, then close with a wide token army or a flicker-fueled stax/toolbox plan.
Strengths
- Flash + flying makes Appa a surprise blocker and lets you blink permanents on opponents' turns
- Turns ETB creatures into repeatable value engines while discounting recasts to
- Builds a free token army that synergizes with anthems and go-wide payoffs
- Mono-white consistency and access to the format's best stax and recursion pieces
- Self-sufficient commander that rebuilds quickly after board wipes
Weaknesses
- Mono-white struggles with raw card draw and ramp compared to other colors
- Airbend exiles your own permanents, leaving you temporarily vulnerable if you can't recast
- Token strategy folds hard to sweepers like Wrath of God and Blasphemous Act
- No interaction with the stack and limited removal flexibility outside white's toolkit
- Combo potential is modest without external card-advantage engines
Key Cards
- Restoration Angel — Backup flash-blink that protects key creatures and re-triggers ETBs alongside Appa.
- Skyclave Apparition — A premier removal ETB you can airbend and recast cheaply to repeatedly exile threats.
- Solitude — Free-cast removal whose ETB you can loop with Appa's blink for repeated edicts.
- Cathars' Crusade — Every Ally token and blinked creature pumps your whole board, snowballing the go-wide plan.
- Mentor of the Meek — Converts the stream of 1/1 Ally tokens into much-needed card draw in mono-white.
- Smothering Tithe — Premier mono-white ramp to fuel the
recast costs and flash plays.
Upgrade Path
Add more high-impact ETB creatures (Skyclave Apparition, Solitude, Archon of Emeria) and flash/flicker enablers to maximize airbend loops. Improve mono-white's weaknesses with card advantage (Mentor of the Meek, Welcoming Vampire, Esper Sentinel) and ramp (Smothering Tithe, mana rocks) so you can recast for every turn. Cap it with a token payoff finisher like Craterhoof Behemoth or Divine Visitation to convert your Ally army into lethal.
