The Commander

Wurms you control get +2/+2 and have trample.

{7}{G}, {T}: Create a 4/4 green Wurm creature token. This ability costs {X} less to activate, where X is the greatest power among Wurms you control.

Guide

Gameplan

Baru, Wurmspeaker is a mono-green Wurm tribal commander that builds a board of huge tramplers, anthems them with +2/+2, and uses his cost-reducing token ability to flood the field once you have a big Wurm out. You ramp hard early, deploy a fat Wurm, then spam 4/4 (really 6/6 trampling) tokens cheaply before swinging for lethal.

Strengths

  • Built-in anthem and trample turns every Wurm into a real threat
  • Self-sufficient token engine that gets dramatically cheaper with a big Wurm out
  • Mono-green gives access to the format's best ramp and reliable mana
  • Wide, resilient boards that punch through blockers via trample

Weaknesses

  • Mono-green struggles with interaction, card draw, and removal
  • Slow and mana-hungry; the token ability is expensive without a huge Wurm first
  • Vulnerable to board wipes that erase your whole investment
  • Few playable Wurms historically means filling slots with generic green beaters
  • No evasion beyond trample, so fogs and big blockers can stall you

Key Cards

  • Wurmcoil Engine — A premier Wurm that becomes a 10/10 trample with lifelink/deathtouch and slashes Baru's activation cost to {1}{G}.
  • Worldspine Wurm — As the highest-power Wurm, it can reduce Baru's ability to {0}{G} for nearly free token spam.
  • Doubling Season — Doubles every Wurm token Baru makes, immediately doubling your board presence.
  • Cathars' Crusade — Each token entering pumps your whole team, snowballing Baru's tokens into massive threats.
  • Garruk, Caller of Beasts — Refills your hand with creatures and can drop your entire fatty count at once in mono-green.
  • Heroic Intervention — Cheap protection from board wipes and targeted removal that saves your invested board.

Upgrade Path

Add overrun finishers (Craterhoof Behemoth, Pathbreaker Ibex, Triumph of the Hordes) so your wide trampling board converts to instant kills. Lean on token doublers (Doubling Season, Parallel Lives) and powerful ramp (Cradle of the Accursed substitutes aside, run Gaea's Cradle, Nykthos, Cabal-style green rocks) to power explosive activations. Finally, shore up green's weaknesses with protection (Heroic Intervention, Teferi's Protection alternatives like Bant excluded—use Vines of Vastwood/Snakeskin Veil) and recursion to survive wraths.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Swinging with a wide board of buffed trampling Wurms for lethal combat damage
  • ▸Overrun effects like Craterhoof Behemoth or Triumph of the Hordes for a one-shot alpha strike
  • ▸Grinding out repeated token activations until the board is too big to block
  • ▸Voltron-ing a single enormous Wurm with trample through fight/pump effects

Archetypes

  • Tribal Aggro — Baru's anthem and trample make a Wurm-heavy board hit hard and fast.
  • Tokens — His cost-reduced activation churns out 6/6 trampling tokens every turn.
  • Ramp/Big Mana — Mono-green ramp fuels both expensive Wurms and repeated token activations.
  • Go-Wide Stompy — Anthems plus mass token generation overwhelm opponents with sheer trampling power.
