Denethor, Ruling Steward
The Commander
At the beginning of your end step, if a creature died under your control this turn, create a 1/1 white Human Soldier creature token.
, Sacrifice another creature: Each opponent loses 1 life and you gain 1 life.
Guide
Gameplan
Denethor is an aristocrats engine that turns dying creatures into value and incremental life swings. Flood the board with cheap and token creatures, sacrifice them to Denethor's outlet for repeatable drain, and replace bodies via the end-step token trigger. Grind opponents down with death triggers, drain, and recursion until you out-value the table or assemble a sacrifice combo.
Strengths
- Built-in repeatable sacrifice outlet plus token replacement makes it self-sustaining on the battlefield
- Drain effect doubles as both removal-proof reach and life cushion in long games
- Cheap 3-mana commander that fits any aristocrats shell in Orzhov
- Excellent at grinding value against creature-heavy and go-wide tables
Weaknesses
- The
cost on the sac outlet is slow and mana-hungry for repeated use
- Low individual drain (1 life) means it needs payoffs to actually close games
- Vulnerable to graveyard hate and board wipes that strand the engine
- No card advantage stapled to the commander itself, so it leans on support pieces
Key Cards
- Blood Artist — Turns every sacrifice into extra drain, multiplying Denethor's life-swing engine.
- Zulaport Cutthroat — A second Blood Artist effect that scales drain across the whole table.
- Bastion of Remembrance — Enchantment-based drain that survives creature wipes and stacks with the aristocrats.
- Pitiless Plunderer — Generates Treasure on each death to fuel Denethor's
sacrifice cost repeatedly.
- Midnight Reaper — Refills your hand off nontoken deaths, solving the deck's card-advantage problem.
- Grave Pact — Forces opponents to sacrifice every time you sac, turning Denethor into mass removal.
Upgrade Path
Add free or cheaper sacrifice outlets (Viscera Seer, Carrion Feeder, Ashnod's Altar) so you aren't bottlenecked by Denethor's cost, and lean into a persist/undying combo line with a drain payoff for a hard win. Improve card advantage with Skullclamp and Bolas's Citadel, and tighten the mana with fast rocks and a clean dual-land base. Top-end staples like Grave Pact, Dictate of Erebos, and Pitiless Plunderer convert the engine into both removal and combo fuel.

Win Conditions
- ▸Incremental drain from Blood Artist effects triggered by mass sacrifice
- ▸Assembling a sacrifice loop (e.g. persist creature + free sac outlet + drain payoff) for infinite life loss
- ▸Going wide with tokens and overwhelming with anthems or a finisher like Cathars' Crusade
- ▸Grinding the table out on value and life total until they run out of resources
Archetypes
- Aristocrats — Repeatable sacrifice outlet plus token generation is the textbook aristocrats core.
- Tokens — The end-step Soldier trigger and go-wide bodies give you fuel to sacrifice.
- Reanimator — Black recursion lets you sacrifice and rebuy value creatures for endless death triggers.
- Combo — Pairs with persist/undying or Treasure loops and a drain payoff for an instant-kill engine.
