Kambal, Consul of Allocation
The Commander
Whenever an opponent casts a noncreature spell, that player loses 2 life and you gain 2 life.
Guide
Gameplan
Kambal punishes opponents for casting the noncreature spells that power most Commander decks—every ramp rock, removal spell, and combo piece drains them and pads your life total. You play a controlling Orzhov game, slowing the table with stax and taxes while your lifegain fuels payoffs, then close with a drain or extort finisher. The deck wins by attrition, turning incidental life swings into a lethal engine.
Strengths
- Passive incremental advantage that punishes the most common spell types in EDH
- Deep access to Orzhov removal, board wipes, and resilient control tools
- Lifegain synergizes with aristocrats and life-payoff finishers
- Cheap commander that comes online turn 3 and reshapes how opponents play
Weaknesses
- Drains only 2 per spell—slow without amplifiers and weak against creature-heavy decks
- No card advantage stapled to the commander; can run out of gas
- Removal magnet that opponents will kill on sight
- BW lacks fast ramp and card draw relative to other color pairs
- Punishment can be played around by patient opponents
Key Cards
- Aetherflux Reservoir — Turns Kambal's lifegain into a 50-life laser that snipes opponents or a single big payment to win.
- Sanguine Bond — Converts every Kambal lifegain trigger into direct life loss, doubling the drain.
- Smothering Tithe — Punishes the same noncreature spells while generating mana to power your control plan.
- Authority of the Consuls — Another tax-style enchantment that drains and slows opponents in the same lane as Kambal.
- Vito, Thorn of the Dusk Rose — Cheaper Sanguine Bond effect that turns lifegain into a wincon.
- Exquisite Blood — Pairs with Sanguine Bond/Vito for an infinite drain combo seeded by any life loss.
Upgrade Path
Add fast mana and tutors (Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor, Mana Vault, Arcane Signet) to assemble Exquisite Blood + Sanguine Bond/Vito faster. Layer in more taxing stax (Archon of Emeria, Thalia, Heretic Cathar) to compound Kambal's punishment, and protect him with Swiftfoot Boots and counter-removal. Tighten the curve and add card advantage like Phyrexian Arena and Necropotence to avoid running out of gas in long control games.

Archetypes
- Lifegain/Drain — Kambal's gain triggers feed Sanguine Bond, Vito, and Aetherflux payoffs.
- Stax/Taxes — His punishment plus Smothering Tithe, Rule of Law, and Authority of the Consuls grinds the table down.
- Control — Orzhov removal and wraths plus Kambal's pressure let you durdle and win late.
- Aristocrats — Lifegain support and Orzhov sacrifice payoffs combine for incremental drain.
