Lurrus of the Dream-Den
The Commander
Companion — Each permanent card in your starting deck has mana value 2 or less. (If this card is your chosen companion, you may put it into your hand from outside the game for as a sorcery.)
Once during each of your turns, you may cast a permanent spell with mana value 2 or less from your graveyard.
Guide
Gameplan
Lurrus grinds value by recurring cheap permanents from your graveyard every turn, rebuilding board presence through removal and sacrifice. You play a low-curve Orzhov aristocrats/midrange game, sacrificing and replaying small creatures and artifacts to accrue incremental advantage and bleed opponents out. The deck wins through repeated value loops, drain effects, and resilient pressure that opponents can't out-attrition.
Strengths
- Relentless card advantage by recasting permanents from graveyard each turn
- Cheap permanent base makes the deck fast, mana-efficient, and resilient to wraths
- Excellent at grinding longer games and out-valuing single-removal-heavy tables
- Easy combo and recursion loops with cheap artifacts and sac outlets
- Lifelink on the body buffers against aggro
Weaknesses
- MV 2 restriction (if used as companion) severely limits bombs and high-impact cards
- Slow to close games; can be out-tempoed by dedicated combo decks
- Heavy graveyard reliance—vulnerable to exile and graveyard hate
- Limited board wipes and few big mana sinks within the restriction
- Each-turn cap of one recast can bottleneck explosive turns
Key Cards
- Phyrexian Tower — Free sac outlet that fuels graveyard recursion and ramps for cheap permanents.
- Skullclamp — Cheap artifact draw engine that loops with Lurrus and any token generator.
- Blood Artist — Two-mana drain payoff that turns recurring small creatures into a win condition.
- Ashnod's Altar — Free sac and ramp outlet enabling repeatable loops with recurred permanents.
- Sun Titan — If not run as companion, it doubles your MV-2-or-less recursion engine alongside Lurrus.
- Vault of the Archangel — Cheap permanent that grants lifelink and deathtouch, dominating combat with tokens.
Upgrade Path
Decide whether to run Lurrus as a companion (full MV-2-or-less deck for the extra card) or just in the command zone (freeing you to play bombs and wraths). Add fast mana and tutors like Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor, and Mana Crypt, then tighten an aristocrats combo line such as Vizier of Remedies + Devoted Druid feeders or Blood Artist drain loops. Finally, shore up graveyard protection and interaction with cheap disruption like Swords to Plowshares and Dauthi Voidwalker.
