Drivnod, Carnage Dominus

Mana value5EDHREC#1,757

The Commander

If a creature dying causes a triggered ability of a permanent you control to trigger, that ability triggers an additional time.

{B/P}{B/P}, Exile three creature cards from your graveyard: Put an indestructible counter on Drivnod. ({B/P} can be paid with either {B} or 2 life.)

Guide

Gameplan

Drivnod doubles every death-trigger your permanents have, turning sacrifice loops and mass death into overwhelming value or lethal drain. You fuel an aristocrats engine all game, then close by sacrificing creatures repeatedly while doubled Blood Artist effects drain the table.

Strengths

  • Doubles all death triggers—drain, draw, counters, tokens—giving outsized value per dead creature
  • Mono-black gives access to elite tutors, ramp, and recursion for consistency
  • Cheap, repeatable aristocrats payoffs become game-ending with the doubler online
  • Self-protecting via indestructible counters off graveyard fuel

Weaknesses

  • Heavily commander-dependent; without Drivnod the engine stalls and recasting gets pricey
  • Single color limits access to blink, token doublers' colors, and broad interaction
  • Vulnerable to graveyard hate and to exile-based removal that ignores death triggers
  • Needs both payoffs and sac outlets assembled—can be slow if pieces are missing

Key Cards

  • Blood ArtistIts drain trigger is doubled, draining two life per death for fast incremental wins.
  • Zulaport CutthroatDoubled aristocrat drain that only hits opponents, accelerating the kill across the table.
  • Pitiless PlundererEach creature death makes two Treasures, generating explosive mana to loop sacrifices.
  • Bastion of RemembranceAn enchantment version of Blood Artist that's hard to remove and doubled by Drivnod.
  • Grave PactForces opponents to sacrifice twice per your creature's death, gutting their boards.
  • GravecrawlerEndlessly recurring sac fodder that triggers doubled death payoffs cheaply.
  • Midnight ReaperDoubled card draw on nontoken deaths refuels your hand for repeated loops.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana (Dark Ritual, Jeweled Lotus) and tutors (Demonic, Vampiric, Diabolic Intent) to assemble engines faster. Build toward a compact infinite loop like Gravecrawler + Phyrexian Altar + Pitiless Plunderer with a doubled drain payoff, and include graveyard recursion (Victimize, Reanimate) plus protection like Ashnod's Altar redundancy. Trim slow value pieces for cheaper, repeatable sac outlets to lower your average win turn.
