The Commander

Flying

Whenever Fang attacks, another target legendary creature you control gets +X/+0 until end of turn, where X is Fang's power.

When Fang dies, if he wasn't a Spirit, return this card to the battlefield under your control. He's a Spirit in addition to his other types.

Guide

Gameplan

Fang is a mono-red Voltron/legendary-tribal beater: attack each turn to dump his power onto another legendary creature you control, swinging for huge unblocked damage. Curve out into impactful legends, then use Fang's attack trigger to turn one of them into a one-shot finisher. His built-in resurrection means he survives a board wipe or removal once for free, keeping pressure relentless.

Strengths

  • Built-in recursion makes Fang resilient to spot removal and one board wipe
  • Flying evasion lets him connect and feed the +X/+0 to a real threat
  • Strong commander damage potential when you pile his power onto a trampling or evasive legend
  • Mono-red gives access to the best aggressive ramp, haste enablers, and burn reach
  • Synergizes with the deep pool of red legendary creatures and legendary-matters payoffs

Weaknesses

  • Only one resurrection — once he's a Spirit, he stays dead permanently
  • The buff requires a second legendary creature on board, so an empty board makes Fang mediocre
  • Mono-red lacks card draw and instant-speed interaction, leading to topdeck wars
  • Vulnerable to flyers/reach and chump blocking without trample
  • Tax effects and exile removal (which dodges the death trigger) shut him down

Key Cards

  • Hellkite Charger — With a buff from Fang it triggers extra combat steps, chaining attacks for lethal damage.
  • Aggravated Assault — Pairs with red ramp to grant extra combats, multiplying Fang's attack-trigger buffs.
  • Embercleave — Lands cheaply off a wide attack and gives a Fang-boosted legend double strike and trample.
  • Rogue's Passage — Makes your buffed legendary unblockable to guarantee a one-shot commander-damage kill.
  • Ilharg, the Raze-Boar — A resilient legendary haymaker that loves carrying Fang's power for a knockout swing.
  • Krenko, Mob Boss — Generates a token army while also being a legendary target for Fang's buff.

Upgrade Path

Add more extra-combat enablers (Combat Celebrant, Moraug, Fury of Akoum) and evasion/double-strike granters to convert Fang's buff into faster kills. Lean into haste and aggressive ramp (Mana Crypt, Jeska's Will, treasure makers) so legends hit play and swing the same turn. Tighten the curve with high-impact red legends and protection like Heroic Intervention-style red effects (Boros Charm, Soul's Fire) to push past interaction.
