Gilraen, Dúnedain Protector
The Commander
,
: Exile another target creature you control. You may return that card to the battlefield under its owner's control. If you don't, at the beginning of the next end step, return that card to the battlefield under its owner's control with a vigilance counter and a lifelink counter on it.
Guide
Gameplan
Gilraen is a mono-white blink engine: tap her and pay to flicker your own creatures, either dodging removal/targeted spells now or returning them at end step buffed with permanent vigilance and lifelink counters. You build a board of value ETB creatures, protect key pieces, and grind incremental advantage until you overwhelm or chip opponents out with lifelink-fueled beaters.
Strengths
- Repeatable, instant-speed protection that blanks targeted removal and combat tricks on your best creature
- Reuses powerful enter-the-battlefield effects (tutors, draw, removal, ramp) every turn
- Counters permanently grow your team, turning vanilla bodies into vigilant lifelinking threats
- Mono-white consistency keeps the mana base painless and color-screw rare
Weaknesses
- Slow and mana-intensive at
plus tap, only one activation per turn without untap effects
- Vulnerable to summoning sickness—she can't blink the turn she lands and is an obvious removal target
- Mono-white struggles with raw card draw and lacks reach against fast combo decks
- Board wipes and graveyard hate hit harder since the deck leans on a developed battlefield
Key Cards
- Solitude — Blinking it with Gilraen turns it into repeatable, instant-speed creature removal every turn.
- Restoration Angel — Doubles as a backup blink outlet and a flash body to protect creatures when Gilraen is tapped or dead.
- Karmic Guide — Reanimation on a flickerable body gives recursion that pairs with Gilraen's exile-and-return loop.
- Sun Titan — Recurs your low-cost permanents repeatedly and is a huge lifelinking body once counter-buffed.
- Thousand Moons Smithy — A strong white value engine whose ability and bodies reward repeated blinking.
- Esper Sentinel — Top-tier mono-white card advantage that keeps your engine fueled and taxes opponents.
Upgrade Path
Add efficient ETB heavy hitters (Solitude, Skyclave Apparition, Recruiter of the Guard) and untap effects to push multiple Gilraen activations per turn. Improve card advantage with Esper Sentinel, Welcoming Vampire, and Smothering Tithe, and add fast mana like Sol Ring and white rituals to deploy her ahead of curve. For top-end power, build toward a blink combo (Karmic Guide plus a sac outlet and a recursion target) or a Felidar Sovereign/Aetherflux lifegain finish.

- Value Midrange — She grinds incremental advantage by reusing tutors, removal, and draw creatures.
- Tokens/Go-Wide — Permanent vigilance and lifelink counters scale a creature-heavy board into a resilient attacking force.
