Gonti, Lord of Luxury
The Commander
Deathtouch
When Gonti enters, look at the top four cards of target opponent's library, exile one of them face down, then put the rest on the bottom of that library in a random order. You may cast that card for as long as it remains exiled, and mana of any type can be spent to cast that spell.
Guide
Gameplan
Gonti is a value engine that steals cards from opponents' decks and casts them with any color of mana, breaking mono-black's color restrictions. The deck grinds out incremental advantage by repeatedly blinking, reanimating, and recurring Gonti to exile more cards, while leaning on black's removal and tutors to control the board. You win slowly through accumulated card and mana advantage, then close with a big payoff or recursion loop.
Strengths
- Repeatable card advantage and access to off-color spells every time Gonti enters
- Deathtouch makes it a strong defensive blocker and political deterrent
- Plays great with blink, sacrifice, and reanimation engines that abuse the ETB
- Mono-black gives deep access to tutors, removal, and recursion for consistency
Weaknesses
- Value is slow and grindy—lacks an explosive fast win on its own
- Color identity stays black, so ramp and fixing options are narrower than multicolor decks
- Relies on repeatedly recasting Gonti, which gets expensive under commander tax
- Vulnerable to graveyard/exile hate and fast combo decks that race you
Key Cards
- Ashnod's Altar — Sacrifices Gonti for mana to enable reanimation loops and infinite ETB value with the right pieces.
- Phyrexian Reclamation — Cheaply returns Gonti from the graveyard to recast it and trigger another steal.
- Conjurer's Closet — Blinks Gonti each end step for free repeatable theft without paying commander tax.
- Reanimate — Brings Gonti back from the yard for one mana to reset its ETB engine.
- Sidisi, Undead Vizier — Demonic-tutor-on-a-body that fetches your blink, sac, or reanimation enablers.
- Bolas's Citadel — Powerful black card-advantage engine that can also dig toward your combo finish.
Upgrade Path
Add fast mana (Dark Ritual, Jet Medallion, Cabal Coffers + Urborg) to recast Gonti past commander tax and power explosive turns. Tighten the blink/sac/reanimation package—Conjurer's Closet, Ashnod's Altar, Phyrexian Reclamation—so Gonti's ETB fires every turn, and include a deterministic finisher like Torment of Hailfire or a Bolas's Citadel draw engine. Lean into tutors (Vampiric Tutor, Demonic Tutor) for consistency and consider Gray Merchant or extort effects to convert grind into lethal.

Archetypes
- Blink/Flicker — Repeatedly flickering Gonti steals a new card from opponents each turn for endless value.
- Aristocrats — Sacrifice outlets recur Gonti for mana while abusing its ETB and deathtouch blocks.
- Reanimator — Cheap reanimation spells loop Gonti from the yard to fuel its theft engine.
- Control — Mono-black removal, hand attack, and Gonti's grind let you out-attrition the table.
