Gonti, Night Minister
The Commander
Whenever a player casts a spell they don't own, that player creates a Treasure token.
Whenever a creature deals combat damage to one of your opponents, its controller looks at the top card of that opponent's library and exiles it face down. They may play that card for as long as it remains exiled. Mana of any type can be spent to cast a spell this way.
Guide
Gameplan
Cast Gonti and grind value by stealing cards off the top of opponents' libraries whenever your creatures connect in combat. You build a wide-but-evasive board, deal incidental combat damage to every opponent, and bury the table in card advantage—playing their spells with any color of mana while they get only Treasures in return. Win by out-resourcing the table and converting stolen spells into a lethal advantage.
Strengths
- Generates relentless card advantage from every opponent's library, fixing your colors for free since any mana casts the stolen cards
- Rewards going wide with evasive creatures, turning chip damage into a steady stream of theft
- Color fixing in mono-black, letting you cast off-color bombs you exile
- Deters opponents from casting your stuff—if they do, you only give a Treasure, while their incidental theft fuels you too
Weaknesses
- Commander-dependent: removal of Gonti stalls the entire engine
- Mono-black's chronic lack of board wipe survival and limited interaction with artifacts/enchantments
- Theft is contingent on connecting in combat, so heavy go-wide defense or fogs blunt you
- No built-in haste or evasion—needs support to ensure damage actually lands
Key Cards
- Nightmare Lash — Cheap mono-black voltron pump that turns Gonti or a creature into an evasive threat to guarantee combat damage and theft.
- Coastal Piracy — Doubles down on combat-damage value, but more importantly any 'unblockable/evasion' enabler maximizes Gonti's trigger across opponents.
- Whispersilk Cloak — Grants unblockable and shroud so Gonti reliably connects each turn and survives targeted removal.
- Bolas's Citadel — Lets you spend life to cast the cards you exile and your own top deck, accelerating the value engine.
- Cabal Coffers — Combined with Urborg it produces explosive mana to deploy multiple stolen spells in a turn.
- Reconnaissance — Lets creatures deal combat damage then leave combat unblocked-style, ensuring theft triggers safely.
Upgrade Path
Add more cheap evasion and unblockable enablers (Rogue's Passage, Trailblazer's Boots, Slip Through Space) so Gonti and friends always connect, plus protection like Lightning Greaves and Swiftfoot Boots to keep the engine online. Lean into mono-black ramp (Cabal Coffers, Nykthos, Black Market, Bolas's Citadel) to deploy multiple stolen spells per turn. Top-end the deck with recursion (Reanimate, Phyrexian Reclamation) and a clean finisher like Torment of Hailfire or Exsanguinate to convert your resource lead into a kill.

Win Conditions
- ▸Out-grinding the table on card advantage until you cast their bombs and win the long game
- ▸Wide evasive aggro beating opponents down while stripping their best cards
- ▸Casting a stolen game-ending spell (extra turns, board wipes, finishers) with any mana
- ▸Big mana ramp into stolen X-spells or a reanimated threat for lethal
Archetypes
- Theft/Value — Gonti's combat trigger steals and lets you cast cards from every opponent's deck for any mana.
- Aggro/Go-Wide — Multiple evasive attackers multiply theft triggers each combat across all opponents.
- Voltron — Suiting up Gonti with evasion turns one connection per opponent into a value snowball.
- Aristocrats/Sacrifice — Mono-black sac outlets let you cash in stolen creatures and recur Gonti after removal.
