The Commander

As Indominus Rex enters, discard any number of creature cards. It enters with a flying counter on it if a card discarded this way has flying. The same is true for first strike, double strike, deathtouch, hexproof, haste, indestructible, lifelink, menace, reach, trample, and vigilance.

When Indominus Rex enters, draw a card for each counter on it.

Guide

Gameplan

Stuff your graveyard while loading up Indominus Rex with keyword counters on entry, then draw a fistful of cards equal to the counters it gained. From there you win with a hexproof, trample, double-strike commander beatdown or pivot into graveyard recursion and reanimator value. Each recast off discarded creatures refuels your hand and your board.

Strengths

  • Built-in card advantage engine—every cast draws multiple cards if you discard keyword-laden creatures.
  • Naturally becomes an evasive, resilient threat (flying/trample + hexproof/indestructible) for commander damage.
  • Sultai colors give the best graveyard recursion, ramp, and interaction in the format.
  • Discarding creatures synergizes with reanimation, making 'wasted' cards into resources.

Weaknesses

  • Indominus's counters and draw only trigger on entry, so it's heavily dependent on getting it onto the field and recast.
  • Reliant on having multiple keyword creatures in hand—weak topdecks leave it small with no card draw.
  • Five-mana commander that wants recasting gets expensive under commander tax.
  • Counter removal or 'enters without counters' effects can blank the draw payoff.

Key Cards

  • Akroma, Angel of Wrath — Single card grants a huge stack of keyword counters and an equal pile of cards drawn.
  • Reaper King — A creature loaded with relevant keywords; great fuel for both counters and the graveyard.
  • Reanimate — Turns the creatures you discard to Indominus into board presence for one mana.
  • Animate Dead — Recurs the big creatures you pitched, doubling the value of the discard cost.
  • Sol Ring — Ramp to recast Indominus repeatedly through commander tax.
  • Eternal Witness — Buys back reanimation spells or your best discarded creatures for more loops.

Upgrade Path

Add efficient reanimation (Reanimate, Animate Dead, Victimize) so discarded creatures become threats, and pack creatures with stacked keywords (Akroma, Reaper King, Avenger en-Dal) to maximize counters and draws. Improve mana with fast rocks and dual lands to recast Indominus through tax, and include protection like Heroic Intervention and Lightning Greaves to keep your Voltron threat online. For higher power, lean into graveyard loops and tutors to assemble reanimation engines consistently.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Hexproof/trample/double-strike Indominus Rex dealing lethal commander damage.
  • ▸Reanimating a board of fatties discarded to the commander.
  • ▸Grinding card advantage to out-resource the table and finish with big threats.
  • ▸Graveyard-based combos enabled by Sultai recursion.

Archetypes

  • Voltron — Loading Indominus with evasion and protection keywords makes it a fast commander-damage clock.
  • Reanimator — The discard cost feeds graveyard recursion, returning the very creatures you pitched.
  • Value Midrange — Repeated entries refill your hand, letting you grind opponents out of resources.
  • Graveyard Combo — Sultai supports self-mill and reanimation loops that exploit discarded creatures.
