Ivy, Gleeful Spellthief
The Commander
Flying
Whenever a player casts a spell that targets only a single creature other than Ivy, you may copy that spell. The copy targets Ivy. (A copy of an Aura spell becomes a token.)
Guide
Gameplan
Deploy Ivy early, then turn every single-target spell — yours and your opponents' — into a free copy that targets her. Buff her with Auras and pump spells, protect her with hexproof/shroud effects, and swing for lethal commander damage with flying evasion. You're a Voltron deck that hijacks removal and combat tricks to snowball one giant threat.
Strengths
- Generates massive card and mana advantage by copying single-target spells for free, including opponents' removal and pumps
- Flying evasion plus Aura/equipment stacking makes commander-damage kills come fast
- Cheap two-mana body that's immediately impactful and reusable from the command zone
- Punishes targeted interaction — opponents hesitate to point spells at the board
Weaknesses
- All-in on the commander; board wipes and edict/sacrifice effects bypass your protection
- Vulnerable to spot removal in response before you can armor up (Aura/sword tempo loss)
- If Ivy dies repeatedly, commander tax and lost enchantments cripple the deck
- Triggered copy only fires on single-target spells, so opponents can play around it
Key Cards
- Shielded by Faith — Grants Ivy indestructible and rides along on copy triggers, keeping your threat alive through removal.
- Snakeskin Veil — Cheap protection that copies onto Ivy, giving a counter and hexproof at instant speed.
- Rancor — Recurring trample Aura that comes back from the graveyard, helping push commander damage through blockers.
- Berserk — A devastating pump that copies to double Ivy's power and grant trample for explosive one-shot kills.
- Lightning Greaves — Haste and shroud let Ivy attack immediately and dodge targeted removal between buffs.
- Sword of Feast and Famine — Protection from two colors, evasion-friendly buffs, and untapping lands to keep casting tricks.
Upgrade Path
Tighten the protection suite with Heroic Intervention, Tamiyo's Safekeeping, and more hexproof Auras so Ivy survives the first removal spell, then add efficient evasive buffs like the remaining Swords and Embercleave-style payoffs. Lean into low-curve cantrips and tutors (Three Visits, Sylvan Caryatid ramp, Worldly Tutor) to assemble your Aura package faster, and consider infect or double-strike enablers for explosive single-turn kills. Cut clunky high-cost spells in favor of one-mana tricks that consistently trigger her copy ability.
