The Commander

Guide

Gameplan

Kalakscion is a cheap, aggressive mono-black threat that turns your dead and sacrificed creatures into raw power and life loss. You flood the board with cheap, expendable bodies, feed them to sacrifice outlets and Kalakscion's own appetite to grow it into a lethal evasive attacker, while aristocrat drains chip everyone down. The deck plays a grindy attrition game—each board wipe just refuels your engine—then closes with one big swing or incremental drain.

Strengths

  • Mono-black gives access to the deepest pool of tutors, removal, and recursion in the format
  • Sacrifice/recursion shell is extremely resilient to board wipes and spot removal
  • Cheap commander (MV 3) comes down early and pressures life totals quickly
  • Aristocrats payoffs convert every death into reach, so you don't need combat to win
  • Easy access to repeatable card advantage and ramp via rituals and treasure

Weaknesses

  • Single-color means no access to counterspells or efficient artifact/enchantment removal
  • Relies on the graveyard—graveyard hate hits the whole deck hard
  • Sacrifice-fueled drains can be slow against decks with strong lifegain or fast combo
  • If the commander is your main payoff, repeated removal taxes your mana and recursion
  • Lacks blue's protection, so a committed attack can be blanked by a single instant

Key Cards

  • Phyrexian Altar — Free sacrifice outlet that also ramps, fueling both death triggers and Kalakscion's recursion loops.
  • Blood Artist — Turns every creature death into incremental drain, making sacrifices a win condition on their own.
  • Zulaport Cutthroat — A second Blood Artist effect that stacks drains and pings each opponent for a faster clock.
  • Gravecrawler — Recurs from the graveyard for one mana, providing endless sacrifice fodder for your engines.
  • Pitiless Plunderer — Generates Treasure on every nontoken death, ramping you into explosive sacrifice turns.
  • Reanimate — Cheap reanimation that abuses self-mill and sacrifice to recur your best threats and Kalakscion synergies.
  • Bitterblossom — A steady stream of free tokens to feed altars and aristocrat triggers every turn.
  • Yawgmoth, Thran Physician — A premier sacrifice engine that draws cards, removes creatures, and pairs perfectly with drain payoffs.

Upgrade Path

Tighten the curve with more free sacrifice outlets (Ashnod's Altar, Carrion Feeder, Viscera Seer) and stack additional drain payoffs (Bastion of Remembrance, Cruel Celebrant) to enable two-card kill loops with Gravecrawler or Reassembling Skeleton. Add fast mana like Dark Ritual and Jet Medallion plus tutors (Demonic Tutor, Diabolic Intent) to assemble engines faster, and lean on Bolas's Citadel and Necropotence for explosive card advantage. Finally, protect the engine with graveyard insurance and recursion such as Tortured Existence to stay resilient against hate.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Incremental life drain from Blood Artist effects triggered by mass sacrifice
  • ▸Commander damage from a grown, evasive Kalakscion
  • ▸A sacrifice loop (free altar + recursive creature + drain payoff) for infinite drain
  • ▸Reanimating and swarming with large threats after opponents stumble

Archetypes

  • Aristocrats — Black's sacrifice outlets and death-trigger drains make Kalakscion a natural engine for grinding everyone out.
  • Reanimator — Cheap reanimation spells recur fatties and refill the board after sacrifice loops or wipes.
  • Sacrifice/Devour Voltron — Feeding creatures to grow Kalakscion into an evasive, hard-to-block beater can end games in a couple of swings.
  • Tokens — Token generators provide cheap, expendable fodder to keep sacrifice and drain engines firing.
