The Commander

All artifacts have "At the beginning of your upkeep, sacrifice this artifact unless you pay {1}."

Guide

Gameplan

Kataki is a mono-white stax commander: cheaply tax every artifact in play so opponents bleed mana or sacrifice their mana rocks, treasures, and equipment while you run a near-artifact-free creature deck that punches through unimpeded. You curve out into hatebears and tax pieces, lock the table out of acceleration, then close with efficient white creatures or token swarms.

Strengths

  • Cripples artifact-reliant decks (mana rocks, Treasure, artifact ramp, equipment-based decks) for just two mana
  • Devastating in artifact-heavy metas and against cEDH ramp/affinity strategies
  • Cheap, recastable commander that immediately warps the board
  • Slots into mono-white weenie/stax shells that don't need artifacts themselves

Weaknesses

  • Symmetrical-ish: you must build with very few artifacts or you tax yourself too
  • Mono-white struggles with card advantage and reaching the late game
  • Useless against decks that play few artifacts
  • Easily removed, and white lacks strong protection/recursion for it

Key Cards

  • Thalia, Heretic Cathar — Stacks with Kataki to make opponents' artifacts and creatures enter tapped, deepening the lock.
  • Smothering Tithe — Ironically one of white's best ramp/draw engines—run it knowing it survives since you can pay the {1}, generating Treasure that you can afford.
  • Land Tax — Non-artifact card advantage and fixing that keeps mono-white from flooding while you tax others.
  • Archon of Emeria — Pairs perfectly to limit spells per turn and tax nonbasics, compounding the stax shell.
  • Mangara, the Diplomat — Punishes the extra activity opponents take trying to play around your taxes, refilling your hand.

Upgrade Path

Add more low-curve white disruption like Drannith Magistrate, Aven Mindcensor, and Leonin Arbiter to turn the deck into a true prison, and lean on nonartifact ramp/draw such as Land Tax, Esper Sentinel, and Smothering Tithe to fuel it. Tighten the wincon with anthems (Intangible Virtue, Skullclamp draw avoided—stay artifact-light) and a finisher like Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite to slam shut a board you've already starved.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Beat down with efficient hatebears and tax creatures while opponents are mana-screwed
  • ▸Go wide with token producers and anthem effects for a swarm kill
  • ▸Lock the table out of artifacts and grind incremental advantage with Land Tax/Mangara

Archetypes

  • Stax — Kataki's tax is a continuous resource-denial piece that anchors a mono-white hatebear lock.
  • Hatebears — Cheap white creatures with disruptive abilities apply pressure while Kataki taxes the board.
  • Tokens/Aggro — A wide board of nonartifact creatures closes games while opponents stumble on mana.
